This was my entry for a Designer Bookbinders annual competition. (Didn't win) The set book was 'The Somme - An Eye-witness History". I made an overcast, muddy landscape with onlayed, hand-dyed calf. In the foreground are half-buried identification discs, a red one to be sent home to the relatives of the fallen soldier, a green one to be buried with him. The goatskin doublure of the front cover is blind-tooled with quotes from the book: letters from soldiers to mothers, fathers, wives. The inside of the back cover is tooled with the same quotes, but translated into German.
